Repair your own single pane window and avoid these three all too common Rookie Mistakes
1. Sharp glass injuries
First Rookie mistake is not realizing that glass wants to cut you. It looks harmless but minor mishandling can cause a bad cut before you know it. Don’t even give it a chance to cut you. Wear gloves and wear eye protection and don’t attempt this job if you are at all impaired.
2. Breaking glass during installation
Second Rookie mistake breaking the glass during installation. After removing the plastic trim carefully from around the glass remove the broken shards of glass. Clean the area thoroughly where the glass touches the frame. The mistake to avoid is not cleaning the frame well enough. It is common for Rookies to leave a small crystal of glass on the frame. Then later when you put the glass in the frame and push it lightly in order to snug it up, it will break. That small crystal of glass is sharp, and it will start a small nick in the surface of the glass that will cause the glass to crack with very little pressure. It’s a good idea to wipe it clean with a rag to remove all the small crystals. The rag will snag on the crystals and drag them out.
3. Cutting the glass too large
Third Rookie mistake is to measure the glass, and have it cut too large. Rookies often try to measure the glass, so it fits perfectly tight in the orifice. That’s a no no. If you do that, it commonly does not fit. The frame could be out of square also so when they put it in it breaks. Big disappointment, frustration, anger, loss of time, money, and self-esteem follows. The correct way to measure is to make the glass 1/4-inch smaller than both the height and the width. That gives it a 1/8-inch clearance all the way around, which is what all glass technicians do.
4. Falling off the ladder
Fourth rookie mistake is falling off the ladder. This is the big one to avoid. The consequences range from cuts and bruises to the unthinkable. When people climb, they try to carry the glass with one hand which is dangerous but the most common cause of falling for Rookies is stretching out to reach a little too far, then losing their balance and slipping and down they go. The Rookie mistake is to take a chance instead of getting down off the ladder and moving the ladder closer to your work.
